PLEASE READ BELOW BEFORE REGISTERING
Our goal is to provide all of our campers with a safe, fun and developmentally appropriate riding experience. To help accomplish this, we try to accurately assess each camper’s ability in advance to assist in creating balanced groups of similar ability. If you are registering with friends that have different riding abilities but want to ride together, please select the ability of the least experienced rider. Nothing is set in stone and we always get riders to the correct group.
Below is an outline of how we assess rider ability. IMPORTANT: Novice riders do not need prior mountain biking experience but they must already be comfortable riding a bike. Participants must have the ability to start, stop, turn, and ride in a controlled manner for 3 miles. If your child has recently learned to ride and/or is still struggling with the basics, they are not yet ready for these rides. WE ARE ALWAYS AVAILABLE FOR PRIVATE AND SMALL GROUP INSTRUCTION OF ALL AGES TO HELP RIDERS FIND THEIR COMFORT AND CONTROL ON THEIR BIKES. Please contact us with any questions or concerns before registering, especially if you are unsure of your participants riding ability.
NOVICE RIDERS: Are able to comfortably control their bikes with the ability to start, stop, turn, climb and descend small hills for 3-6 miles without constantly stopping. EXAMPLES OF NOVICE RIDES: Slowly riding the Shoreline Trail at China Camp without constantly stopping. Riding from Downtown Mill Valley to Sausalito on streets and paths without frequent rest stops. If you are unsure of your camper’s ability please contact us.
INTERMEDIATE RIDERS: Are able to confidently control their bikes slowly climbing and descending moderate hills for 5-10 miles on dirt without frequent rest stops. EXAMPLES OF INTERMEDIATE RIDES: Slowly climbing the Old Railroad Grade from its start in Mill Valley up to the West Point Inn without frequent rest stops. Steadily riding the Shoreline Trail at China Camp with a few rest stops.
ADVANCED-INTERMEDIATE RIDERS: Are able to confidently control their bikes steadily climbing and descending moderate and technical terrain for 10-15 miles on dirt without frequent rest stops. EXAMPLES OF ADVANCED-INTERMEDIATE RIDES: Steadily climbing the Old Railroad Grade from its start in Mill Valley up to East Peak. Steadily riding the Bay View China Camp loop or Camp Tamarancho loop with a few rest stops.
ADVANCED RIDERS: Are able to confidently control their bikes steadily climbing large hills and descending technical terrain for 15-20 miles on dirt with minimal rest stops. EXAMPLES OF ADVANCED RIDES: Steadily climbing up the Old Railroad Grade from its start in Mill Valley to West Point Inn and then descending Coastal View trail to Muir Beach and then climbing up Middle Green Gulch trail or Diaz Ridge before descending back into Mill Valley. Briskly riding the Bay View China Camp loop and Camp Tamarancho loop.
